new york (and one sf) speakeasies

I've been living in NYC off and on for a couple of years, and I've been to a good number of faux-speakeasies in my day. I also threw in a freebie in SF.

Apotheke

The drinks at Apotheke are retardedly expensive ($15), but they have one of my favorite cocktails ever, a cilantro drink, and when I went there last winter they served complimentary glasses of glühwein to my friend and I, which is something my parents have been making and drinking my whole life. So it was quite nice for me.

Mayahuel

Although technically not a strict speakeasy, Mayahuel is my favorite of the bunch, in spite of the fact that it's primarily a tequila bar. They have a bunch of cocktails made with beer which are quite nice, and the bar snacks are pretty fantastic.

Bourbon & Branch (SF)

This is probably the only speakeasy I've ever been to in San Francisco, with the exception of that one pirate bar I went to that was pretty swanky, and I had another cocktail that spoke to my childhood, The Austrian, designed to reflect the flavors of Austrian white wines.

IV plant pots

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I saw these IV plant pots featured in a NotCot Christmas Gift Guide a couple of Christmases ago. I'm much less interested in the pots than in the IV watering system, which I'm hoping to jerryrig something stolen from a hospital or two. I mean borrowed.

surrealist collages by Max Ernst from early in his career. They're delightful. I have a few postcards that I bought at the Reina Sofia in Madrid that I plan to frame and hang on the wall next to my collection of patent medicine bottles.

A couple of pictures I took at the Museum of Jurassic Technology over Christmas break. These are flowers that have been photographed using x-rays and there were 3D glasses to view them through. The museum is pretty peculiar, and I'm not really sure I liked it all that much, but I did enjoy these photos. They're a bit blurry from the lack of 3D technology. Mi dispiace.
